Learning about Soil

Students in Mrs. Frick’s first grade class at AC Moore Elementary School learned about weathering and soil erosion by conducting an experiment using chocolate chip cookies. Students used q-tips, toothpicks, and water to “weather” and “erode” crumbs from the cookies. What a delicious demonstration! Then, students created vermicompost in a classroom bin to learn more about one way of restoring soil to good health. Finally, students created posters illustrating the principles of healthy soil for the “Life in the Soil: Dig Deeper” poster contest sponsored by the Richland Soil and Water Conservation District. These posters are being used to educate the community about the importance of healthy soil!
